His design is inspired by his life spent outdoors, working and playing in the American mountains and deserts, Tolley brought those days under the sun and stars into the feeling of this magnificent series of sculptures which together create the chess set. Kinetic (It moves around on the center steel ball) horse sculpture brings out smiles. Playing with it on a tabletop or desk is a welcome change from staring at a screen. Inspired by Carousels and Hot Walkers. Tolley shaped each horse on his anvil. It comes apart into two pieces. The round piece at the bottom of the stand was Tolley’s “clenching block”. A clenching block is a tool farriers use to set the cut nail into the horse’s hoof. Tolley used this clenching block for about thirty years.

Tolley’s artist statement: Out of high school, I hit the road and went out to cowboy. I ended up wrangling horses in Estes Park, Colorado. I was hooked on the horse life and followed that path for all of my working days. For thirty-five years I shod horses and became a better blacksmith every year. I retired from shoeing several years ago and now enjoy heating and twisting steel into the shapes I see in my head. This playful sculpture reminds me of that rise of joy I get every time I see a group of horses.
